Ex rookie Glenn Chivers has signed on with Casey for season 2009. After spending the 2008 season on the Saints rookie list, Chivers spent the majority of season 2008 in rehab managing OP. Chivers a champion state school rower, who played five games with the Scorpions in the latter half of the year, proved he has the ability to be a good VFL senior player. Chivers best game for the Scorpions was the R20 clash against Collingwood where he kicked three goals. Chivers is the second ST Kilda player to join the former aligned club, following 2008 Gardner Clark Medallist James Wall.
Chivers after being rookie in 2008- Glenn Chivers took a very different path. The 19-year-old was taken by St Kilda last year after a youth of rowing and school football with St Kevin’s College in Melbourne. Chivers said he was rapt that the Saints took him with their first pick in the rookie draft.“I always knew it would be difficult to get noticed. I probably didn’t have high expectations of getting drafted at the start of the season. But with the recruiting systems these days they look all over the place, you’re bound to be seen at some stage,” he said. The running defender could only manage five games with the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup last year. But when he managed to be best on ground in three of those games, scouts around the country stood up and took notice.“I always thought because I wasn’t regularly playing TAC Cup footy I had limited chance. But I had a good season last year and I was more confident because I knew a few clubs were sniffing around,” he said. “Footy’s unpredictable and you never know what’s around the corner, so it’s handy to be doing something outside,” he said. Before he was rookied, Chivers had never completed a full pre-season of football, instead relying on rowing training to build his fitness. Chivers who played two NAB Cup games in 2008 against Geelong and Richmond is hoping that in 2009 he can have a consistent year and launch another assault on playing AFL footy. Football Manager Craig Lees was delighted with Glenn’s signing, “he was training with Port Melbourne pre x-mas, but he really enjoyed his time at the Scorpions in 2008, so I just kept in contact with him”. “He has elite fitness and has the ability to play tall or small, he is the type of player I believe can be a very consistent VFL player. Chivers had he groins operated on in late October and should be ready for Casey’s second practice match. |
