RECRUITS are normally locked away by March. But last Friday the Casey Scorpions confirmed the late pick-up of Pierce Liddle, and there's every chance they have saved their best signing for last. By Paul Amy- Leader News
Liddle, 19, played for the Northern Territory Under 18 team at the past three national championships, last year as captain, and has regularly featured in Palmerston's best players in the NTFL season. He won Palmerton's Best and Fairest. Melbourne star Aaron Davey put Casey on to the 185cm midfielder after he missed out on the rookie draft in December. Demons recruiting manager Barry Prendergast also vouched for his ability. The Scorpions will make him the inaugural recipient of the Aaron Davey Scholarship, which involves Casey recruiting indigenous players and introducing them to Victorian football. Davey, of course, made his reputation in the VFL, at Port Melbourne. ``Aaron told me about him, just said he'd be worth chasing up, and I Googled his name and there was a lot of stuff come up about him,'' Casey football manager Craig Lees said. ``We've been following him since, watching his progress and speaking to him about coming over. It's obvious the boy can play.``In the end I asked him what he wanted to do and he said he wanted to fly down.''Liddle is due to arrive in Melbourne today (Tuesday) and will live at Carrum Downs.``He's extremely elusive and his skills are sensational,'' Lees said. |
