R8 Scorpions fall Short against Borough |
In Round 8 the Scorpions travelled to TEAC oval to take on Port Melbourne in what many considered as match of the round. Mathew Ferguson, Andrew McQualter and Ben McEvoy were all unavailable giving a good opportunity to the young Scorpions players against a hard bodied Port Melbourne, so Ben McDonald was one late inclusion playing his first senior game for the club.

It was a physical contest with both sides unable to really gain much ascendancy in the game. James Gwilt was enjoying his best game for the season and David Armitage was willing himself at every contest. It seemed as if the Scorpions just couldn’t quite click into gear. At half time the Borough had taken an 18 point advantage, despite having 2 less scoring shots.

The third term saw a little bit more free flowing football, and 7 goals scored for the quarter. Kyle Mathews was working himself back into Form, while Stefan Garrubba and Brad Howard were again providing plenty of dash across half back and half forward. But at ¾ time Port Melbourne had extended their lead by a goal. The start of the last quarter saw the Scorpions intensity and execution of skill lift above what it had been all game. Michael Rix was putting himself into every contest and drove himself into the ground as the only ruckman for the day and 15 minutes into the last quarter we found ourselves within a couple of points. That would be as close as we got however, as Port Melbourne ran over us late kicking 5 goals in about 8 minutes of football to eventually win by 5 goals. The effort from the boys was no doubt there during the game, but things just didn’t seem to work on a day where we had the same amount of scoring shots at goal. James Gwilt earned himself his first BOG ground for the season, with David Armitage not too far behind.

The reserves fought hard all day but were unable to stick with Port Melbourne who eventually ran out 50 point victors, the scoreline didn’t really reflect the competitiveness of the game with Ben Waite and Luke Williams standing up for the Scorpions while Khan Haretuku kicked 3 majors.
