Casey Defeat Sandy for 1st time in 20 outings! |
Round 10 would mark the half way mark of the season and a vital match for both Casey and their opponents in Sandringham with the possibility of consolidating a top 4 spot up for grabs with the old ‘8 points game’. With so much happening in the lead up to the match between these two sides off the ground, this had every reason make it a fiery contest on the ground.
The game started at a very high intensity as both sides tried to out muscle their opponents around the footy, skills left a lot to be desired with both teams really struggling to hurt on the rebound with poor execution and average decision making at best, Still the game showed a lot of intent and it was David Armitage who led the way with unquestionable attacks on the footy throwing himself at every contest and setting the tone for the day, The young Scorpions outfit was giving it everything they had, but at quarter time found themselves trailing by a goal in what started as a low scoring contest.
Casey: 2.2. 14 Sandringham: 3.2. 20
The second quarter was just as intense as the first quarter as the skills picked up slightly. Casey were able to put 3 majors on the board while restricting Sandringham to just the 1. Alex Silvagni was once again controlling everything in the back half and Michael Rix was again outstanding, his will to push himself beyond most people’s limits for the team was evident as he fought hard to cover the ground at both ends. At half time the Scorpions had turned a 1 goal deficit into a 5 point advantage, and it was evident it was going to be an epic battle for the remainder of the game.
Casey: 5.3. 33 Sandringham: 4.4. 28
The third quarter didn’t see any drop in work rate by either team. Kyle Mathews was standing up as skipper and leading from the front with courage and pace while David Armitage just kept on keeping on relentlessly winning the footy and hurting opposition with string tackling and damaging clearance, and Evan Panozza drilled a seemingly impossible goal from the boundary to keep the Scorpions ahead but at ¾ time the Scorpions lead had only increased by 1 point as the strong crowd started to really get involved on the contest.
Casey: 8. 5. 53 Sandringham: 6.11. 47
At ¾ time, Greg Hutchison asked his team to respond to everything that was thrown at them and to not stop running and working to the entire quarter. It would take a big effort as the young team had given it their all to this stage, and the Scorpions hadn’t beaten Sandringham in their last 20 clashes, the most recent in round 1 where they Casey boys let a 20 point half time lead turn into a 37 point loss. But the Scorpions set about changing that and with Jarryd Allen pushing himself all day along with Evan Panozza the Scorpions were not going to let this one slip. Jarryd Allen finished with 4 goals, 4 which he had to work extremely hard for, but deserved every one, while Captain Kyle Mathews fittingly sealed the win with an inspirational crumbing goal to bring the crowd to their feet in applause. The Scorpions would slam on 6 goals to Sandringham’s 2 and walk away 32 point winners! David Armitage was awarded the ABC TV man of the match, earning himself use of the Ford V8 Ute for the week, and the Scorpions continued their impressive form earning themselves 2nd spot on the ladder and extending the gap between the top 4 and the rest of the field.

An undermanned Reserves side battled hard all day and at ¾ time were still in the hunt, however with no interchange and a couple of players playing their first game out of local footy, they were eventually overrun and fell down by 64 points. Joel Galvin gave a BOG performance while Peter Mercoulia kicked 3 goals for the day.
